If you have ever had an AH-HA moment and wondered if the fish that was just let go, or the one that got so close and came unbuttoned might have been a California Saltwater State Record. Here is a little info for you. All information and links or taken from the DFG site or as they like to be called - Department of Fish and Wildlife

NOTICE: This is just general information and input and not intended to guarantee you a record if you follow these steps. But may help your chances.

First things first I would suggest that you print out and keep handy in a dry place this form. It is the application for a POSSIBLE State Record. Serious. You could be the next Record Holder. I have one. Doesn't hurt to dream.

DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME CALIFORNIA SALTWATER ANGLING RECORD VERIFICATION

Read the Rules of WHAT & HOW you need to proceed to have you potential record "Verified" and "Authenticated" .. It's all about Technicalities. If you hate following the rules like I do but know you have to then make sure you do at least these things ASAP.

1) MEASURE THE FISH - With a couple different tapes and devices if you have them handy. And Take PHOTOS - PHOTOS - PHOTOS
Documentation - Documentation - Documentation.

2) WEIGH THE FISH - Certified - Yeah it has to be a certified scale that has a CURRENT Certification by an authorized Government agency.
  • Make sure you have at least 2 witnesses take 3 if can. Get names and numbers and signatures .. (not that we ever tell stories)
  • Have your "goto" places around where you fish to weigh (if anyone here has places they know of drop me a PM and I will link them here) some fish markets have them.
  • PHOTOS - PHOTOS - PHOTOS - Documentation - Documentation - Documentation

3) GET THE FISH IDENTIFIED- by a Biologist from one of the Marine Region offices below. Call them First if Nancy isn't around then you can find a Certified Biologist to doit. DONT PANIC! - You can do this AFTER you have the Fish Weighed. I know a BSP is a BSP and a Corbina is a Corbina.. Remember.. Technicalities & Documentation -Documentation - Documentation
